We are seeking an experienced European Business Reporter to join C&EN's editorial team. This position may be based in either the United Kingdom or Germany and will provide readers with engaging, insightful coverage of the companies, technologies, policies, and market forces shaping Europe's chemical enterprise.

This is an exciting opportunity for a curious and proactive journalist who thrives on breaking news, developing enterprise stories, and uncovering trends that matter to leaders across the chemical, scientific, and industrial sectors.

What You'll Do

• Identify breaking news, trends, and feature opportunities relevant to companies across the European and global chemical enterprise, including stories focused on mergers and acquisitions, technology breakthroughs, consumer     market trends, regulation-driven changes, intellectual property developments, and startup company formation and funding.
• Consistently generate and execute original story ideas that differentiate C&EN's coverage and provide unique value to readers.
• Cover significant developments affecting the European chemical industry and related sectors, with a particular focus on business, innovation, sustainability, policy, and emerging technologies.
• Contribute content across a variety of platforms, including articles, newsletters, podcasts, videos, webinars, and social media.
• Demonstrate strong journalistic ethics and a commitment to accuracy, fairness, and high-quality reporting.
• Produce sophisticated stories that conform to C&EN style standards and meet publication deadlines.
• Collaborate with editors, designers, multimedia producers, and audience engagement teams to maximize the impact of your journalism.
• Develop and maintain a network of contacts across industry, academia, government, and investment communities.
• Attend and cover key industry meetings, conferences, and events throughout Europe.
• Take initiative in identifying breaking developments, pitching timely story ideas, and pursuing enterprise reporting opportunities.

What You'll Bring

Experience

• Bachelor's degree in science, journalism, communications, or a related field. Chemistry or a chemistry-related discipline is highly desirable.
• Minimum of 3 years of professional newsroom experience as a business, science, technology, or industry journalist.
• Experience covering business, scientific, technology, industrial, or policy-related topics.
• Experience covering the European chemical, manufacturing, sustainability, energy, or cleantech sectors is strongly preferred.
• Multimedia journalism experience is a plus.
• Experience within the chemical sector or scientific publishing industry is a plus.

Skill

• Strong news judgment and enthusiasm for identifying important developments and translating them into compelling journalism.
• Excellent reporting, interviewing, writing, and communication skills.
• Ability to gather, analyze, and synthesize information from a variety of sources and communicate it clearly to readers.
• Demonstrated success writing engaging stories on complex topics for scientifically sophisticated audiences.
• Proven initiative in generating story ideas, pursuing original reporting, and producing impactful content across multiple platforms.
• Experience pitching, reporting, and writing timely news stories under deadline pressure.
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple assignments simultaneously.
• A positive attitude and commitment to collaboration and teamwork.
• Fluency in English is required. Additional European languages are an asset.

Compensation & Benefits

Compensation will be competitive and commensurate with experience, qualifications, and location. Reasonable offer ranges for each location are:

UK- 55,000 to 60,000 GBP

Germany- 76,000-80,000 EUR
